Wedges

A wedge is closely related to the inclined plane. A wedge can be used to life a heavy load over a short distance or to split things into two pieces.

Let's Learn about the Wedges All Around Us!

With your partner, read the handout entitled, "The Great Pyramid" and to learn all about how wedges were used in the building of "The Great Pyramid." After your reading, complete the questions about "The Great Pyramid" and then complete the "Wedges in Animals and Plants" worksheet.

Build Your Own Pyramid!

Follow the steps below to create your very own pyramid, just like the Egyptians!

1. Draw lines to divide your paper into 6 six-inch squares. (use a ruler to measure your squares)

2. Cut off 2 corner squares to make a T shape. Tape one of the cutout squares to the top of the T.

3. Measure 3 inches from the end of each of the four outer lines and draw a dot in the middle. Draw lines from each dot to the corners of the middle square.

4. Cut on these lines to make 4 triangle shapes.

5. On the center square, write a short paragraph listing the types of simple machines used in making "The Great Pyramid" as well as the type of work that is exerted in order to build the pyramid.

6. Trace the top 2 inches of the point of one of the triangles onto your yellow paper. Cut out the triangle and use it to trace 3 more triangles. Cut out the triangles, then tape all 4 triangles together to make a mini pyramid.

7. Crease on the dotted lines so that the pyramid walls fold up. Bring the walls to a point, then place the smaller pyramid on top to hold the walls together.
